Summary
The Dairy Farm Manager will hold full operational responsibility for the day-to-day management of the dairy farming operation. This includes leadership of livestock, feed, infrastructure, staff, compliance, and performance management. The role requires a disciplined and forward-thinking individual who can manage large, multi-functional teams while maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare, production efficiency, biosecurity, and staff development. Working closely with department heads and senior leadership, the Farm Manager ensures the farm runs as a unified, high-performing operation aligned with the company’s goals.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement annual operational plans, including feed procurement, herd management, and resource allocation.
- Align operational targets with company KPIs for productivity, profitability, and sustainability.
- Foster a positive, respectful, and performance-driven work environment across all farm teams.
- Assist with staff recruitment, onboarding, and development in collaboration with HR.
- Conduct regular training and professional development to ensure skills alignment and team motivation.
- Encourage collaboration through weekly meetings with department heads and ensure open communication across all levels.
- Oversee all aspects of herd health, reproduction, and performance in coordination with veterinary and nutrition staff.
- Ensure the implementation of the company’s reproductive and genetic strategy.
- Ensure robust protocols are in place and followed for calf rearing, milking routines, and health monitoring.
- Ensure full compliance with national, local, and company-specific regulations related to animal welfare, environmental impact, labour, health and safety, and milk quality.
- Maintain and enforce farm-wide biosecurity and security protocols to prevent disease entry and safeguard assets.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of the farm's cost structure, margins, and key productivity metrics.
- Benchmark performance regularly against internal and external standards to identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare and present performance reports to senior management and advise on corrective actions as needed.
- Oversee the condition and functionality of all farm infrastructure including buildings, roads, parlours, fencing, water systems, and machinery.
- Approve capital expenditure for new infrastructure or equipment upgrades.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation throughout the team.
- Manage forage production in coordination with the arable division.
- Ensure feed planning and delivery systems are aligned with nutritional targets and animal performance goals.
- Ensure high standards of milk hygiene, handling, and cooling are consistently achieved.
- Drive a zero-tolerance policy on practices that compromise milk safety or cow welfare.
- Act as the key point of contact between farm operations and senior leadership.
- Represent the farm in meetings with regulators, auditors, partners, and local authorities as required.
Candidate Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, or related field.
- Additional certifications in dairy cattle health, reproduction, nutrition are a plus.
- Minimum six years’ practical experience in a management role on 10,000+ cow dairy farms; or 10 years across smaller sized dairy operations; or a minimum of 7 years on the Baladna El Djazair farm management team with a minimum 2 years as Assistant Farm Manager.
- Experience with precision agriculture tools, feeding systems, and reproductive technologies.
- Exposure to managing farm operations during early-stage development or expansion is preferred.
- Strong team leadership and staff development abilities.
- Skilled in SOP development, resource allocation, and equipment/infrastructure oversight.
- Competence in digital farm management systems (e.g., herd health software, feeding programs).
- Good working knowledge of safety protocols, biosecurity, and animal welfare legislation.
- Practical, hands-on leadership style with strong communication skills and proven compassionate leadership.
